Healing the Healers on Pause

Mahalo nui loa to the Maui Strong initiative of the Hawaiʻi Community Foundation for funding Hoʻoikaika Cares: Healing the Healers in 2024! There were 116 health and human service providers from 28 different agencies who attended throughout the year.
Monthly sessions offered a reliable space for participants to connect, share resources, and develop coping strategies. These gatherings fostered community and helped attendees build resilience during a critical period of recovery and rebuilding in the wake of the August wildfires. The two-hour sessions were designed and co-facilitated by Michele Navarro Ishiki of MNI Counseling and Heidi Allencastre, Hoʻoikaika Navigator at Maui Family Support Services, Inc.
The program received overwhelmingly positive feedback on post-session evaluations. Attendees valued the self-care tools, grounding exercises, and creative outlets that helped them reflect and recharge. Many appreciated the chance to step away from daily stresses and learn strategies to address burnout and compassion fatigue. Facilitators were commended for creating a safe, inclusive environment where participants felt seen and supported. The cultural and interactive elements, such as lei-making and art activities, stood out as particularly impactful, blending personal healing with professional growth.
